![]() In order to get home sooner Dana was reassigned to the ship Alert.ġ836 – Dana arrived back in Boston, Massachusetts on September 22, 1836. This exposed him to much more of the ships activities than an ordinary seaman. Being well educated and intelligent Dana quickly learned Spanish and became an interpreter and accompanied the captain when dealing with the Mexicans. The Pilgrim collected hides for shipment to Boston, and Dana spent much of his time in California curing hides and loading them onto the ship. After reaching Alta California Dana docked at a number of places (including Monterey, San Pedro, San Juan Capistrano, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara and San Francisco). ![]() The trip required the hazardous route of sailing around Cape Horn. ġ834 – On Aughe left Boston on the brig Pilgrim his destination was for AltaĬalifornia, a part of Mexico at that time. ![]() The cure of the day was hard labor to regain strength of body and vision which led him to sign up as a common seaman on a ship. He contracted measles in his junior year and it so affected his eye sight that he was unable to study. ġ831 – In July 1831, Dana enrolled at Harvard College. ![]() 1815 – Dana was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on August 1, 1815. ![]()
